2015 Ford Focus can predict potential spinouts
This year the new 2015 Ford Focus is launching with next-generation stability control technology that improves transitional stability, helping to predict and prevent potential spinouts. This new technology was designed by Ford to prevent drivers from losing control of their car in the event of a spinout, and intervenes much earlier than past systems.
Ford engineers designed the enhanced transitional stability technology to dramatically improve handling during potentially dangerous driving maneuvers, such as quickly changing direction. The system monitors vehicle speed, steering position and turn rate of the steering wheel, as well as other inputs to determine if a skid could happen. As soon as a risk is identified, the brakes can be individually applied to keep the car moving along safely.
With older vehicles, drivers could potentially overcorrect and end up in an oversteer situation, where there would be a loss of control. Today, the enhanced transitional stability system can smoothly allow the driver to regain control before a spin even starts.
The new Focus is one of the first Ford vehicles to use this technology, which can anticipate potential spins 100 to 200 milliseconds faster than earlier systems. Ford engineers developed the system by applying an algorithm already used in Ford’s Roll Stability Control to the vehicle’s transitional stability control system.
The 2015 Focus is not only safer this year, but also better to drive, with more dynamic handling and improved road feel. Ford says the new Focus feels more connected to the road than ever before, and is even easier to drive.
