Ford Brings 10-Speed Transmission to 2017 F-150

Ford has continually worked hard to improve the fuel efficiency and performance of the F-150 with the use of new technologies, starting with the first EcoBoost engine. The current generation F-150 added a military-grade aluminum body for weight savings, and now the first ever volume-production 10-speed automatic transmission is being introduced to the F-150 lineup.

Combined with the recently introduced second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, the 10-speed transmission helps improve fuel economy estimates by 1 mpg in city, highway and combined ratings for two-wheel drive models, and 2 mpg combined for 4×4 models.

The new 10-speed transmission also enables better all-around performance and increased towing and hauling control. The increased power and torque of the EcoBoost V6 and more gear selections allow for better low-end and peak performance, which helps when hauling heavy payloads and towing heavy trailers.

Ford’s 10-speed transmission uses smarter shift logic to give drivers more confidence in any situation. An all-new adaptive shift-scheduling algorithm monitors over a dozen powertrain and driver control signals in real time to make sure the right gear is selected at the right time for a more engaging driving experience.

A high-speed one-way clutch allows for non-sequential shifting, and the integrated torque converter/turbine clutch saves weight and reduces the overall size of the transmission. The new 10-speed transmission is also the first gearbox from Ford that does not use heavy cast-iron components, instead relying on advanced materials and alloys for strength and weight savings.

Nearly 60 percent of F-150 buyers are opting for EcoBoost engines in their trucks, making it clear these powertrains perform well in the real world. This year over 1-million F-150 owners will save 110 million gallons of gas thanks to the fuel-saving technology used in their EcoBoost-equipped trucks.
