Ford Transit to star in American Pickers – Five Star Ford of Plano, TX
Ford vehicles have a long history of being in movies and on television. Notable examples include the iconic Mustang from “Bullitt,” the Gran Torino from “Starsky and Hutch” and Eleanor the Shelby GT500 from “Gone in 60 Seconds.” Now joining the ranks is the all-new Ford Transit debuting this week on the popular History Channel show “American Pickers.”
The stars of the show, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz, have been looking for a new full-size van to replace their aging Sprinter. The pair picked the largest of the Transit models available, with the long wheelbase, extended body and high roof, which is powered by a 3.2 liter five-cylinder Power Stroke diesel engine.
Ford is celebrating the addition of the Transit to “American Pickers” by holding a scavenger hunt spanning across the United States. Contestants who find one of 10 scale-model Transit vans at various antique shops will get to use a new Transit for two weeks. Who knows, maybe one might pop up near Plano, Texas.
The new Transit is based off of the European version that has been selling well for decades, but adapted to fit the needs of American businesses. The Kansas-built van is available in multiple body styles and sizes, including van, wagon and chassis cab and has many Ford features including SYNC with MyFord Touch and available rear-view camera.
The new van should allow the duo from Antique Archaeology to haul larger and heavier items, and get more finds before having to head back home.
“When the van is full, then we’ve got to come home,” said Wolfe. “I’m interested in real estate on wheels.”
